COMPLIANCE4DPP: Making digital product passports suitable for practical use
Creating transparency, ensuring compliance with requirements Digital
product passports provide transparency throughout a product’s entire life cycle, thereby forming an important basis for traceable supply chains and circular value creation models. Among other things, they bring together information on origin, composition, environmental impact, reparability and recyclability. However, putting this into practice presents many companies with regulatory and technical challenges: relevant data is often scattered across different systems and spread across multiple organisations. At the same time, legal requirements must be met and information exchanged securely, transparently and in an interoperable manner. This is precisely where the European research project COMPLIANCE4DPP comes in, in which soffico is participating as part of an international project consortium.
Integrating compliance directly into the data infrastructure
COMPLIANCE4DPP aims to automatically verify regulatory requirements and embed them directly into existing European data room infrastructures. Using the ‘Compliance Definition as Code’ approach, the project seeks to technically map regulatory requirements and automatically check data and transactions for compliance. The project is based on Gaia-X principles and the Pontus-X ecosystem. Among other things, solutions are being developed for governance, identity management, interoperability and automated compliance checks. The results are to be made available as freely usable open-source components. There is a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. A dedicated DPP framework is intended to make it easier for them to access European data spaces and to reduce technical and administrative barriers.

In our view, the added value of a Digital Product Passport only becomes apparent when relevant data can be reliably consolidated from various machines, production systems and business applications. As part of COMPLIANCE4DPP, we aim to help bridge the gap between technical integration, secure data exchange and regulatory requirements. In this way, the Digital Product Passport can become more than just an additional documentation requirement: it can serve as a foundation for transparent supply chains, sustainable business models and a self-reliant European data economy.

Moving from theory to practice together
The approach developed is being tested using two industrial use cases. The results are intended to serve as transferable blueprints for other companies and sectors.
COMPLIANCE4DPP was launched in June 2026 and is funded by the Horizon Europe research programme. Coordinated by EIT Manufacturing East GmbH, 19 partners from nine countries are working together to implement Digital Product Passports in an automated, interoperable and practical manner.
